According to Ayurveda, the postpartum period, also known as “Sutika,” is a critical window for the mother’s physical, emotional, and spiritual recovery.
The 40-day sacred window postpartum is a time for the mother to bond with the baby, rest, and focus on healing. It is recommended to avoid physical and mental exertion during this time, and instead, prioritise rest and relaxation. Gentle yoga, meditation, and breathing exercises can also be beneficial.
During this time, it is recommended that the mother receives support from an Ayurvedic practitioner or doula who can provide guidance on postpartum diet, lifestyle, and self-care practices, as well as support their energy and hormonal changes.
Giving birth is considered vata-provoking, as it can disturb apana vayu, which governs the downward flow of energy in the body. This makes it essential to nourish vata postpartum, as the mother’s body is in a delicate state.
To manage the postpartum window according to Ayurveda, it is important to follow a diet and lifestyle that supports the body’s natural healing process. The mother’s digestive fire (agni) is considered to be weak during this time, so it is recommended to consume easily digestible, warm, and nourishing foods. Warm soups, stews, and porridges with healthy fats and proteins are great options. Avoiding cold, raw, and processed foods is also recommended.
To nourish vata postpartum, warm oil massages, also known as “Abhyanga,” can be done daily. This helps to calm the nervous system, improve circulation, and support the body’s natural healing process. It is also recommended to avoid exposure to cold and wind, and instead, stay warm and cozy.
Overall, managing the postpartum window according to Ayurveda is all about nourishing the body, mind, and spirit. By following a diet and lifestyle that supports the body’s natural healing process and taking time to rest and rejuvenate, the mother can recover from childbirth and bond with her baby in a peaceful and healthy way.
