The Power of Letting Go
Mel Robbins’ Let Them Theory has gained massive popularity for its simple yet profound message: stop trying to control others, stop wasting energy on things you can’t change, and simply let them be who they are. While this concept feels fresh and empowering, its roots run deep in ancient wisdom—particularly in Ayurvedic psychology and Eastern philosophy.
For years, I’ve been teaching a similar principle, which I call The Karmic vs. Dharmic Choice Principle, centred around the phrase:
“Their choices, their karma—your HigherSelf move, your dharma.”
This Ayurvedic perspective offers a deeper, more spiritually aligned approach to Robbins’ Let Them Theory. Instead of just letting go, Ayurveda teaches us to release with awareness—understanding that others’ choices create their karma, while our response shapes our dharma.
Let’s explore how this ancient wisdom aligns with modern self-development and how embracing it can bring peace, clarity, and empowerment into your life.
What Is Mel Robbins’ Let Them Theory?
Mel Robbins’ Let Them Theory is based on a simple idea:
- Stop trying to control what other people do.
- Don’t waste energy forcing things to go a certain way.
- Instead of reacting emotionally, simply let them.
At its core, it’s about releasing attachment—something deeply connected to both Ayurvedic psychology and Buddhist philosophy.
Ayurvedic Psychology & the Concept of Non-Attachment
In Ayurveda, the mind (manas) operates based on three qualities, or gunas:
- Sattva (clarity, wisdom, balance) – leads to peace and acceptance.
- Rajas (agitation, control, attachment) – leads to stress and overreacting.
- Tamas (ignorance, resistance, fear) – leads to emotional suffering and stagnation.
When we operate from Rajas, we feel the need to control everything—other people, situations, outcomes. But Ayurveda teaches that true mental and emotional balance comes from shifting toward Sattva—where we release, allow, and focus on our own path.
This is why I developed The Karmic vs. Dharmic Choice Principle, which takes Robbins’ idea one step further.
The Karmic vs. Dharmic Choice Principle: A HigherSelf Approach
Unlike Let Them Theory, which focuses on detachment alone, Ayurveda teaches that we must also make empowered choices in response to what we release.
- Karmic Choice → Acting from impulse, reaction, or ego. This keeps us stuck in emotional cycles.
- Dharmic Choice → Acting from wisdom, alignment, and our HigherSelf. This brings clarity and peace.
For example, let’s say someone disrespects you:
- A karmic reaction might be arguing, seeking revenge, or internalizing the hurt.
- A dharmic response would be setting a boundary, walking away, or maintaining inner peace.
This is why I say: “Their choices, their karma—your HigherSelf move, your dharma.” You don’t need to control their actions—you only need to make your next move from a place of alignment.
How This Ayurvedic Approach Frees You
Trying to control people depletes your energy (ojas in Ayurveda). The more we focus on others’ actions, the less energy we have for our own well-being.
By shifting from karmic reaction to dharmic response, we:
- Protect our peace
- Stop taking things personally
- Break free from emotional suffering
- Make choices that align with our highest self
This isn’t just about letting go—it’s about stepping into your full power.
How to Apply The Karmic vs. Dharmic Choice Principle
- Pause & Observe – When triggered, take a breath before reacting.
- Ask Yourself: “Am I about to make a karmic choice or a dharmic choice?”
- Choose Differently – If it’s karmic, step back. If it’s dharmic, move forward with clarity.
- Affirm: “Their choices, their karma. My HigherSelf move, my dharma.”
By practising this daily, you’ll start feeling lighter, freer, and more in control of your own life.
Final Thoughts: The Power of Choosing Dharma
Mel Robbins’ Let Them Theory is a great starting point, but through The Karmic vs. Dharmic Choice Principle, you gain a deeper level of mastery over your energy, emotions, and responses.
Next time you feel frustrated by someone’s actions, remember:
- You can’t control their karma, but you can align with your dharma.
- You don’t need to react—you need to rise.
- Your HigherSelf move is always your best move.
This is how we step into true power, peace, and alignment.
